Matthew 6:33 - 'Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.'
We may be very familiar with this passage, but how often do we actively and consciously seek God first, prior to all our needs?
When we are in want of a particular need, it can be very easy to turn our focus, time, efforts and attention on our needs and requests, rather than on God alone.
However Matthew 6:33 reminds us that all of our mind should be focused on God alone, and everything else will come after.
Notice that the passage says that when we seek God 'FIRST,' then 'all these things' will be given to us. Notice that it calls it just 'these things,' because we have so many things and needs that we wish to have in our lives. But no matter what it is, they do not come before God, but after him, they are secondary.
God understands that some things are important to us, such as succeeding and achieving in life, getting a good job, finding a partner, having a good marriage, family life, etc. God still wants us to be happy and enjoy life (Ecclesiastes 3:12). But 'all these things' shouldn't be prioritised above God because they are still temporary.
Our desire should be to be close to God. Our priority should be putting God first, above everything else. Then when we are completely focused and consumed in God, the rest and 'all these things' will be given to us as our reward.
In the bible, there were many people of God who desired his closeness and sought after his righteousness first above everything else. They never lacked in anything! They also received their heart's desires.
When Solomon became King, he continued to put God first and didn't concern himself with gaining riches and wealth, but for wisdom and guidance from God to be a good king. For putting first, God decided to give him many riches and wealth as well. Solomon made history for being the richest king. Till this day, there was no man as rich as Solomon. Many historians have tried to find the secret to his riches. But Solomon simply sought after God's righteousness and put him first above everything else.
When we frequently take the time out to earnestly and diligently seek God, we will get more. We will receive our answers, we will get our heart's desires. We will also receive the results of our work and labour, and most of all, peace and joy from the Lord.
When we seek after God and put him first above everything, he will complete our needs, our purpose, provide us with all we need for daily living, so we can live life to the fullest with God at the centre.
When we delight ourselves in the Lord, he will give us the desires of our hearts - Psalm 37:4
